If something is sugar free, look out! How is it sweetened? NutraSweet / Aspartame / Equal is composed of three molecules: phenylalanine, aspartic acid (both amino acids) and methyl alcohol (methanol), a human specific, highly toxic poison. Further, methyl alcohol is converted into formaldehyde and formic acid, both are highly carcinogenic because of their toxic effect on the immune system, specifically affecting the thymus gland - also affecting the brain and central nervous system, the heart and lungs. Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable to the cumulative effects. Methyl alcohol is toxic to the fetus, causing malformation, even death.
After entering the body, the components of Aspartame are rapidly released into the bloodstream. Methanol, a deadly metabolic poison, is apparently the first to be separated. Rarely found in its free form, methyl alcohol is usually derived or produced from other substances. It can cause serious tissue damage, including blindness and even death. Since the body lacks the necessary enzymes to detoxify it, methanol is toxic. Its rate of elimination is five times slower than a similar amount of ethyl alcohol, as found in beer, whisky and wine.

For Aspartame to be eliminated at all, the body must first convert it to formaldehyde, then to formic acid, and ultimately to carbon dioxide. Dr. Richard Wurtman, a professor of neuroendocrinology at MIT, says that phenylalanine is known to be toxic to the brain in large doses. This amino acid can cause mental retardation and seizures in those with phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic disorder. Their numbers are relatively small (1 in 15,000) and they must carefully avoid phenylalanine. The rest of us are wise to be wary. An estimated 2% of the US population - 4.5 million people have one of the two genes required to manifest PKU. While they are free from the disease, they may be sensitive to phenylalanine. They have yet to discover a test for this one-gene condition. Someone who drinks 4-5 Aspartame-sweetened drinks a day might introduce enough phenylalanine into the brain to affect the synthesis of neurotransmitters, possibly leading to mood swings, irritability, anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches, high blood pressure, increased appetite, even seizures. The relative concentration of phenylalanine and aspartic acid, the two amino acids in aspartame, is ten times higher than found in foods. For Aspartame to be eliminated at all, the body must first convert it to formaldehyde, then to formic acid, and ultimately to carbon dioxide.
As part of the Aspartame Alert we are told:
“Aspartame (L-Aspartyl / L-phenylalanine Methyl Ester) is an artificial sweetener, 200 times sweeter than sugar, that was accidentally discovered by the Searle Drug Company in 1965.

“The story of the duplicity by which the Searle Co. managed to gain approval to market Aspartame is reprehensible and a matter of Public Record. The FDA, in defending itself, states that no food additive went through a longer period of examination, and indeed that is true. It is also true that Boards of Inquiry, Investigative panels and renowned Scientists, over a lengthy six year period, unanimously recommended against approval. A newly appointed Director of the FDA, who later resigned under charges of bribery, overruled them.
“In examining the tests submitted by Searle, the Investigators found systematic attempts to deceive the FDA. Negative results were deliberately withheld, many tests were so badly botched up that no conclusions could be ascertained, untagged test animals in unmarked cages were mixed up with control groups, tumors were cut out and not examined for malignancy, and lab rats were substituted from unrelated tests. At one point, there was even an official demand that Searle be indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for fraud, but in the end, Searle did not even have to submit new tests to prove the safety of Aspartame as was required by law.
"As the law now stands, only the company requesting approval for a food additive need supply test results to the FDA, who does no testing to verify them, unlike the more stringent regulations for a drug. Under that same law, Searle (now the NutraSweet Co.) is not required to monitor or report any adverse symptoms that result from the use of its product.
“Aspartame, known commercially as NutraSweet or Equal, sweetens several thousand different products and is used by at least 100 million people in the US. It is consumed most commonly in the so-called diet sodas.

"A lot of money is being made from Aspartame sweetened drinks; it’s really simple: sugar is addictive and Aspartame creates an increased thirst. The NutraSweet hangover consists of malaise, nausea, headache, dizziness, visual disturbances, sometimes convulsions, and possible severe mood swings. These can also occur because of the methyl alcohol in cigarette smoke and alcohol. Methyl alcohol intoxication is suspected in mental aberrations, seizures, suicidal tendencies, behavioral disorders, urinary tract infections, skin lesions and demyelinating diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and ALS.
"To cleanse the system from these hangover symptoms, avoid this sweet poison for thirty days and see how you feel. As the body cleanses, the first few days may show a temporary increase in symptoms; this is normal. Things will taper off and you will feel better. After thirty days, if there is any doubt about the effects, ingest some and see the results. You will be glad to know the difference, and to know that you are in control of what you take in, and how you feel.
“The FDA and NutraSweet Co. are quick to reassure us that we ingest methanol in fruit juices and some vegetables.
"They neglect to point out that in these natural products, the methanol is bound by pectin that our body enzymes cannot break down, in addition to being accompanied by ethanol in far greater amounts, which acts effectively to buffer methanol’s ability to cause damage.”

A truly natural sweetener, Stevia rebaudiana, is 30-40 times sweeter than sugar and actually heals the pancreas & liver when in its unrefined state: Sweet Leaf Whole Leaf Stevia Concentrate. This is not a claim from the company that makes it - Wisdom Natural Brands - but a claim of many natural physicians.
